Realities Versus Perceptions: How Living in the Present Transforms Your Mind Into a Productivity Engine

How Much of Our Life Happens in Our Mind?

I’ve been thinking lately about how often we live more in our minds than in reality.

Something happens, and almost immediately, our mind starts creating a story around it.

Someone doesn’t reply to our message, and we start wondering why.

A conversation ends, and we replay it in our heads, thinking about what we said, what we should have said, and what the other person might have meant.

Something hasn’t even happened yet, and we are already imagining all the ways it could go wrong.

And suddenly, we are no longer living the moment.

We are living inside our thoughts about the moment.

This is one of the ideas that stayed with me while reading Don’t Believe Everything You Think by Joseph Nguyen.

There is a difference between what is happening and what we think about what is happening.

Someone being quiet is a fact.

“They must be upset with me” is a story.

Not knowing what will happen is reality.

“Something bad is going to happen” is a thought.

And yet, we often treat our thoughts as facts.

Maybe we don’t need to stop thinking.

Maybe we just need to stop believing every thought that crosses our minds.

To pause.

To notice the difference between reality and the story we are creating around it.

Because life is happening here.

Not yesterday. Not tomorrow. Not in the endless conversations inside our heads.

Here.

With love, Adriana!
