Starting From Zero Is Not Failure

When I arrived in the UK, I had experience, education, dreams and yet I felt like I was starting from zero.

New language nuances.
New system.
New culture.
New rules.

At first, it felt like everything I had built back home didn’t count. But here’s what I learned:

Starting from zero is not failure.
It’s rebuilding with stronger foundations.

I became more adaptable. More humble. More determined.

Being “The Foreigner” Builds Character

There’s something powerful about being the outsider.

You observe more.
You listen more.
You work harder to prove yourself.

Sometimes it hurt the accent jokes, the subtle stereotypes, the feeling of not fully belonging.

But those moments shaped me. They forced me to grow thicker skin without losing my softness. And that balance? That’s strength.

Success Abroad Is Not Always What People Imagine

From the outside, living in the UK sounds glamorous. Better salaries. Better life. More opportunities.

But what people don’t see are:

The lonely evenings.
The missed family events.
The cultural confusion.
The internal battles.

Success abroad is quieter than people think. It’s not about showing off. It’s about surviving, adapting, and slowly building something meaningful.

Strength Is Built in Silence

No one applauds the hard days.

No one sees the doubts, the anxiety, the “What am I doing here?” moments.

But strength is built exactly there in the quiet decisions to keep going.

And every Romanian woman who moved abroad carries a story like this. A story of sacrifice. Of courage. Of silent victories.

One of the hardest lessons I learned in the UK wasn’t about money.
It wasn’t about language.
It wasn’t even about loneliness.

It was about comparison.

When you move abroad, you constantly see people who seem ahead of you.
Better jobs.
Better houses.
Better cars.
Better lives.

And sometimes, without even realizing it, envy creeps in.

But here’s what I learned:

What you see is the reward.
What you don’t see is the price.

That beautiful house?
Maybe it cost years of missed family birthdays.

That high salary?
Maybe it came with anxiety, pressure, and sleepless nights.

That “perfect” life on social media?
Maybe it hides sacrifices you wouldn’t be willing to make.

We envy outcomes.
We don’t see the cost.

And the truth is simple:

If someone has more, it’s often because they paid more in risk, in effort, in tears, in distance, in courage.

So instead of asking, “Why don’t I have that?”
I started asking, “Am I willing to pay the price for that?”

Most of the time, the answer surprised me.

Because sometimes we don’t actually want what others have.
We just want the image of it.

So instead of looking around and feeling behind, look within and keep building your own path.

With love, Adriana!
